Thelonious Monk Quartet – Live At The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, April 15, 1961 – AVRO, Hilversum

In honor of what would have been Thelonious Monk’s 98th birthday (born: October 10, 1917), I ran across this concert recorded at the famed Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on April 15, 1961 and preserved by Netherlands Radio.

It features Monk, along with Charlie Rouse on tenor Sax, John Ore on bass and Frankie Dunlop on drums – one of several sets recorded between the 15th and 16th of April that year. This one was rebroadcast a few years ago – there are announcements in Dutch at the end.

Always a pleasure to listen to and make discoveries from – one of the true gifts and geniuses of Jazz who was at the right place, at the right time.

Enjoy the concert.
